How to Sell / Protect your new CD

Postby Boomtwang » May 4th, 2015, 7:12pm

An older friend of mine asked me what is the most convenient and mostly legal way to promote and sell a musicians new original CD ? Do you allow the listeners to hear a thirty second portion of each tune , or just give the whole album out as is ? How does a musician capitalize financially these days ? Even I have no solid answer . Any actual advice from a recent situation , Thank You !

Protect it? You mean like registering a copyright and listing it with a publishing company?

If you want to sell it to anyone under the age of 40, then use one of the many downloadable services available for such things.

Promoting a new CD is easy but selling the CD is a different story.
I'll make 3 valid points for your friend...
1. If you play music for $ yer in the wrong biz, especially in this town where even cover bands are underpaid and underappreciated.
2. If the music isn't rap or country no one under 30 will care.
3. The easiest way to try and sell CDs is at your gigs, if you can get any.

I know of two record stores in the city that are constantly full of people well under thirty buying original music that isn't rap or country.

The copyright office is a source of hope and joy.

I second selling CD's to drunk chicks at shows. My wife buys them all the time... and then never listens to them.

I don't think stealing music songs is what it used to be because it's too much of a hassle - especially with the decline of the PC, CD and USB drives. It's just easier to buy the good songs for $5 on itunes or Amazon MP3, and stream it when I want it on your phone.

He could probably share full versions of the songs on SoundCloud or even YouTube with a reasonable expectation that no one will bother stealing it - of course if he's old and jaded, then forget that argument. I also believe that if he's a small time musician - then the people who care about his music will care about him and buy it instead of steal it.
