I've been a DW guy for a long time and really feel that you can't compare anything to their attention for detail, quality, finishes and overall sound. Of course it's all relative because that 'sound' doesn't appeal to everyone.

That being said I've always had a soft spot for Ludwig who were the kings back in the day no doubt. They never really advanced with the times but you can't deny what they did for the drum world in the 60's and 70's. Old Ludwig sets are super sweet. A nice vintage 14" SupraPhonic still kills any newer snare IMO.

high-end Yamaha drums are extremely nice as well.

I always wanted to play on a Gretsch kit, I don't know anyone that's ever had one. Every one of those companies makes nice drums, Pacifics are even nice from what I hear.

The question is, why is the mighty KENT not on this list??

I got a catalina kit at my house, I love it.... real open jazzy toms and a nice Ringo like thud from the kick. Of course when I "need" the rock I go to my 30in Ludwig kick. :)

I'm guessing the posters on these boards are mostly young(er) folks. I post on another board where probably 90% of the folks there would have said Ludwig. But, most of them are old studio and jazz guys.

I got it at BDO for like 75 bucks. heh I had to order a frikkin' custom made beater head for it which cost more than the drum did.
