Mohawk Emo Night with Cut Me Up Genny

When I walked into Mohawk Place on January 7th, my former, seventh-grade emo kid came out. I don’t think you ever really grow out of your emo phase, and it was quite nice getting to bond with the rest of the crowd during Emo Night at Mohawk Place.

I got there a little early, and the doors weren’t open yet, but there was a crowd of people starting to line up to get their night started. DJ Alexis Valentine kicked off the night by playing the most popular hits from bands such as Bowling for Soup and Paramore. She made sure to preface that no one should feel uncomfortable tonight and that if there was someone making you uncomfortable, you should let her know. She was such a sweet DJ to start the night as I bopped my head to some music.

But the main show for tonight was an emo cover band, Cut Me Up Genny. Comprised of Mitch  VanDenBerghe on Guitar, Tom Caster on Bass, Jacob Leland LoMaglio on Drums, Curtis Matteson on Guitar, and Alea Pettrone on Vocals. Cut Me Up Genny started their set list off with bangers such as I’m Not Okay by My Chemical Romance, Sugar by Fall Out Boy, and Sk8er Boi by Avril Lavigne. They even had a little fun with the audience by having a photo contest. Whoever took the best photo or video and posted it would get free tickets to their next show! It truly was so much fun seeing the band play around with lead vocals and different songs.

It was really great getting to see such friendship and just going back to my happy place again. I even had a really nice guy come up to me and ask if I had any eyeliner. He also complimented the makeup I did on my boyfriend to match me. It was a really fun night and I hope they have more of these.
