Review: “Eastside” by Maegan the Singer

The recent resurgence of R&B is making waves all across the country, even here in western New York! Up-and-coming artists like Maegan the Singer are here giving classic R&B to an audience that could use a little soul in their day.

The newest single from Maegan the Singer follows her debut EP Pretty Girl, partially released earlier this year and fully released last month. Though she may not have much music out yet, her newest single proves that she’s an artist to keep an eye on.

Track Review

“Eastside” is as classic R&B as you can get, from the smooth beats to the soulful lyrics. Maegan’s voice is so full of soul and passion, and she uses that to her advantage in this song. This track is all about passion and the soft fires of romance, and as she tells the story of “Eastside” with her honey-sweet voice, I can’t help but be a little captivated.

The only thing that kept me from fully loving this track was the main beat. The beats fell in a place that slightly took me out of the experience of the song. However, I have a classical music bias, so sometimes new and cool techniques end up a little lost on me.

Still, all throughout this song, I was able to relax and sink into the music. That feeling is what I love so much about R&B. The lyrics were well crafted, telling a story that moves physically with references to direction, but also flows in a more metaphorical sense.

I also have to mention one of the lyrics that stuck out to me. “He’s diving in a pool of melanin” is such a great line that also highlights the black excellence that helps R&B to thrive. I can’t help but smile every time I hear it.

Verdict

Maegan the Singer is full of potential, and this new song definitely proves that. If you’re a fan of more recent R&B, you need to check her out. She may still be in the learning process, but the only downside of that in her case is that she hasn’t released much music yet.

You can find Maegan on Soundcloud under the username MAEGAN if you want to stream her music, and I highly recommend that you do!
