Review: ‘Trash Talk’ by Real Movement

Real Movement, a cosmic indie rock band, combines deep grooves with intentional but playful songwriting. They land somewhere between P-Funk and Pavement, playing off of their interests in indie rock, jazz, funk, and soul. Real Movement’s newest album, ‘Trash Talk’ was recently released on September 2, 2022. The band says, “This transformation has pushed Real Movement into its most collaborative and most creative period yet.”

Singles – Track Review

The Worm – The song goes right to work with 46 seconds of funky grooves mixed with very uplifting beats. When the vocals kick in, a soft but intentional voice paints a picture of an early morning with a fun play on words, “The early bird catches no moss and the rolling stone gets the worm.” I really enjoy this song’s illustration of a bigger side of a problem, and extended instrumentals break things up nicely. A heavy drum beat and bass riff back and forth before the song returns to the final verse of an impactful message. The lyrics of this song are well-written, displaying the internal conversation of a person looking at the heavier side of society’s problems.

White Collar Crime – This song starts low and funky. I like how it really gets deep. ‘White Collar Crime’ is an interesting look at a rockstar wondering if he measures up to his idols. The protagonist is asking “Do you feel that way because you sing those songs? Or, do you sing those songs because you feel that way?” It’s a take on classic First World problems, coming from privilege and not having to experience the problems of his heroes. The music ties in well with the message. I feel like I was missing something in its deeper meaning, but I really like this song and it could be one of my new favorites.

Gravity – The slow build-up really allows for anticipation. The fictional and physical force of gravity takes the protagonist in the direction in which he wants to go. When he was younger, he had dreams to achieve. As he gets older he feels the force of “gravity” or time pulling him in a different direction than the one he had planned, but he’s okay with it. Things don’t always go as planned but that’s life. The music is really well put together and I enjoyed this song, as well.

Verdict

Overall, I really loved these singles and the meanings behind them. The instrumentals were phenomenal and complemented the vocals nicely. I really enjoyed Gravity as I could relate to the meaningful lyrics.

This was the first Real Movement album I’ve listened to, but it definitely will not be my last! I really felt their messages and loved their connection with each other. I can’t wait to listen to the rest!
